With 14 categories up for grabs, the prestigious awards celebrate some of the region’s best hotels, restaurants and individuals who exemplify the region’s vibrant visitor economy.

The awards will be held in Spring next year with many of the winners going on to represent the region at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence, giving tourism business the opportunity to shine and represent our region on a national stage.

This year the North East picked up two Gold awards for Serenity Farne Island Boat Tours for Experience of the Year and Kidlandlee Holiday Cottages for Self Catering of the Year. A special award for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism will also be announced on the night. This year’s winner was actor and TV Presenter Robson Green.

Sarah Green, chief executive of NGI said: “Congratulations to the businesses and individuals who have been named as finalists, we look forward to celebrating with them at the awards ceremony next year.

“Tourism is without doubt a huge asset for the region’s economy and as the first government-funded regional tourism pilot we have set ourselves the ambitious target to double the size of the sector in the next ten years – creating more jobs, driving innovation, ensuring an accessible and inclusive welcome for all and creating year-round demand.

“As part of the pilot we are working closely with the businesses at the heart of our visitor economy to deliver a business support programme to ensure the sector can reach its full potential. Businesses such as these announced today are key to raising that profile and achieving those targets.

“We have some exciting developments set to open in the region over the next few years, including The Sage ICC and The Sage Arena, which will help to further propel the North East as a leading visitor destination.”

NE Youth awarded £3,000 thanks to generosity at North East Tourism Awards

A photograph of young people from NE Youth standing with NGI representative holding a large cheque.
Charity Chosen as annual recipient by awards organiser NGI

Newcastle Gateshead Initiative (NGI) not only awarded 17 tourism businesses and individuals, but also donated the proceeds of a huge raffle at the recent North East England Tourism Awards.

NGI has presented £3,000 to NE Youth, the Newcastle-based development charity to help further its work with young people and its efforts to make a positive difference to the lives within the region. The organisation works towards ensuring all young people deserve to get involved in their communities, enjoy their lives, and achieve their potential.

More than 40 prizes were up for grabs at this annual event, with generous donations from the region’s businesses.

“This funding will allow us to continue to provide high quality youth work provision in key communities and support some of the most disadvantaged young people to access safe spaces, well-being and employability support. A huge thank you to NGI who chose NE Youth as their nominated charity, this will really make a difference  to young peoples lives.”

Jon Niblo, Chief Executive, NE Youth

“Although it comes as no surprise, the huge generosity of the tourism businesses in our region has been quite incredible. From overnight stays to vouchers, memberships to gifts – every raffle prize donated contributed to this fantastic sum.  We are incredibly grateful to the businesses and of course everyone who bought a raffle ticket on the night.

“At NGI we are committed to creating opportunities for residents, supporting communities and making great places to live and work. By working with our partners and supporting charities like NE Youth we can help inspire young people and ensure the jobs and opportunities we create are accessible to all.”

Ian Thomas, Destination Director NGI

“Every single young person deserves to be given the opportunity to achieve their potential and thrive. As a board member for NE Youth, I understand the huge difference they make to young people lives, building confidence, breaking down barriers and most of all empowering and preparing them for the future. NE Youth and NGI are both committed to creating opportunities for young people and I couldn’t be prouder that NGI has been able to play a small part in supporting the incredible work of NE Youth.”

Kelly Gleadow, Head of Communications at NGI, and NE Youth Board Member

Led by NGI, The North East England Tourism Awards recognise and celebrate the quality of the tourism offer in the region. These awards are run in partnership with the VisitEngland and eligible winners of the regional awards will go through to the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence final, ensuring we promote the best of the region on a national stage.

Applications for the regional event in 2024 will open in June. Find out more at www.northeasttourismawards.co.uk

The awards were once again sponsored by Newcastle College and Bidfood. Students from both Newcastle College and Gateshead College also supported the evening with photography, videography and hospitality service.

Sarah Green, Chief Executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI) who deliver the awards, said: “Huge congratulations to all of the winners tonight. It was fantastic to all be together again celebrating our amazing tourism sector in the region, especially during English Tourism Week which helps to shine a light on the nation’s tourism sector.

“All of tonight’s businesses have demonstrated the true strength and quality of tourism businesses in the North East, something they should all be extremely proud of. Our two new category winners tonight are great examples of the inspiring attractions and talented individuals here in the region, who despite challenging times over the last few years have continued to deliver an unforgettable service for our visitors.”

Lisa Hamilton-Murray, Deputy Principal, at Newcastle College, said: “Newcastle College continues to be a proud supporter of the North East England Tourism Awards and this year’s event was particularly special.

“After such a challenging two years, it was the first time that many of our students were able to gain valuable work experience within the hospitality and tourism sector and it was wonderful to see them being part of the event. It was also fantastic to be back together with our local venues and employers, and to celebrate and recognise the vital part they play in supporting our region. Congratulations to all of the winners.”

Susan Justice, Head of Business Development North East at Bidfood, added: “We were delighted to be able to sponsor the North East England Tourism Awards again this year, and it was made even more memorable after not being able to celebrate in person for so long.

“This year we also sponsored the Small Hotel of the Year Award which highlighted the fantastic choice visitors have when choosing some where to stay in the region. Congratulations to all of the winners.”
